Peru – Salesians launch short film about Don Bosco and his first prophetic dream

02 February 2024

(ANS – Lima) – This year, 2024, which marks the 200th anniversary of the first prophetic dream that Saint John Bosco had at the age of nine, in which Christ and the Virgin Mary indicated to him what his mission would be, the Salesians of Peru have launched a short film on this mystical vision of the saint, adapted to the reality of today's young people.

When John Bosco was 9 years old, Jesus and the Virgin Mary appeared to him in a dream. The future saint saw some boys swearing and began to fight with them to silence them. Christ pointed out to him that the solution was not beatings, but meekness and charity.

In order for him to achieve this, the Lord presented his Mother to him. Young people thus went from being wolves to being meek lambs. And Our Lady asked John to do the same with her children.

To make this dream better known and spread its message, the Salesian Communication Centre in the St Roe of Lima Province of Peru (PER) has made a short film in which it presents each of these characters adapted to the current reality of Lima and what happens in the streets.

Commenting on this initiative with the news agency ACI Prensa, Fr Jesús Jurado, Director General of the short film and Delegate for Social Communication in PER, said that this short film was wanted because "Don Bosco's dream 200 years ago continues in us and through us."

"This is why it was important to realise the dream starting from our life and our reality... We want to show that we all have something to dream about " he said.

In the short film, John Bosco is played by Jorge Salazar, who in real life is a student at the San Francisco de Sales school in Breña, Lima. He plays the role of a poor boy who, while selling sweets, meets Fr Lucho, a priest who invites him to the Sol Bosco oratory, where there are games and Christian formation for the little ones.

Counting the money from the day's sales, Juan falls asleep on the street and begins to dream a dream in which he is forced to struggle with other children and face the consequences, until he discovers how to become their leader.

This short catechetical film lasts 10 minutes and can be viewed for free on the Youtube channel of the Salesians of Peru. Fr Jurado encourages everyone to look at it, stressing that "it is important to live life as a dream."
