“There are still those who suffer and die to witness to Jesus”: the missionaries killed in 2023

At the Angelus on the feast of Saint Stephen, the first martyr of the Christian community, Pope Francis recalled: “There are still – and there are many – who suffer and die to witness to Jesus [...] Now as then, the seed of their sacrifices which seems to die, sprouts, bears fruit, because God continues to work wonders through them.”

At the end of 2023, Agenzia Fides published a dossier, edited by Stefano Lodigiani, on the missionaries and pastoral workers killed last year.

The information collected by Agenzia Fides notes that in 2023 20 missionaries were killed around the world: 1 Bishop, 8 priests, 2 religious (not priests), 1 seminarian, 1 novice and 7 laymen and women.

Although the lists compiled by Fides are always open to updates and corrections, there were 2 more missionaries killed than the previous year. According to the continental breakdown, this year the highest number is again recorded in Africa, where 9 missionaries were killed: 5 priests, 2 religious, 1 seminarian, 1 novice. In America, 6 missionaries were murdered: 1 Bishop, 3 priests, 2 laywomen. In Asia, 4 lay people died as a result of violence. Finally, a layman was killed in Europe.

The complete dossier is available on the Fides website and can be downloaded as a pdf.
