Portugal – Salesian Music Schools: Music, Body and Soul

15 November 2023

(ANS – Lisbon) – The teaching of music has been part of the Salesian educational method since the time of Don Bosco, who always understood it as an essential tool of his system of integral education of young people. "An oratory without music is like a body without a soul" (Biographical Memoirs V, 222), in fact, the Saint of the Young used to say. Today in Portugal his spiritual heirs cultivate this important dimension also through their Salesian music schools.

Thanks to a qualified teaching staff and adequate recognition of the various teaching areas, Salesian music schools are open to all students, internal and external, and to people of all ages. Lessons on individual instruments, ensemble music lessons, general training, composition and production, are just some of the offers available at the Musicentro in Estoril, established in 2012; but also in Évora, with the school started in the 2014-2015 academic year, in Lisbon (1994) and Porto (2019) and at the Dom Bosco Music Centre in Manique (2003).

The training also includes a first contact with the stage, since the students also participate in live performances at school shows, auditions and concerts. And the movement generated is significant, with over 1,300 students and 100 teachers.

At the Musicentro in Estoril, 283 students and 27 teachers teach Electric Bass, Drums, Singing, Clarinet, Collective Combo Lessons (pop/rock or jazz band), Vocal Ensemble, Transverse Flute, Music Training, Guitar, Jazz Harmony, History of Music, Rhythm Laboratory, Oboe, String and Wind Orchestra, Guitar Orchestra, Piano, Multimedia Production, Saxophone, Writing Lyrics, Acoustic Training, Violin and Cello.

In Évora, 173 students attend the different study programs carried out by the Salesians and their collaborators: Musical Initiation, General Course or Free Course, with musical, instrumental or singing training and ensemble music classes.

142 students attend the Dom Bosco Music Center run by the Salesians in Manique, with 12 teachers active in the teaching of Electric Bass, Drums, Singing, Clarinet, Flute, Classical and Electric Guitar, Piano, Trumpet, Trombone, Saxophone, Bow Violet, Violin, Cello, Double Bass, Musical Training, Chorus, Combo, Accordion and Maintenance of Acoustic Pianos.

There are 538 students and 35 teachers at the Salesian Music Centre in Lisbon – the leader of these Salesian music schools in Portugal, and who produced and produced the Musical Don Bosco staged in several replicas during last summer's World Youth Day. The lessons range from courses on individual instruments to general training, from the improvisation workshop to the musical, from production to music technology...

Finally, in Porto, the most recent project, there are 14 teachers and 179 students, engaged in courses in Violin, Saxophone, Music Production, Piano, Classical and Electric Guitar, Music Training, Children's Choir, Singing and Drums.

The educational and artistic offer of the Salesian music schools in Portugal is rich and fruitful, and always accompanies, in full Salesian style, the specific training in the subjects with human attention to the student and the transmission of values.
