The group of missionaries had been eagerly anticipating this trip for months. They had spent countless hours preparing for the journey ahead, learning about the customs and traditions of the people they would be working with. Despite the political instability ravaging Niger Republic in the recent past, our Niger-4 have been enthusiastic and looking forward to this journey and to begin staying in their new home.
The Salesian Congregation has always been known for its dedication to education and youth development. The mission in Niger is no different. Their task is to establish a new Salesian presence in the country and provide much-needed education and vocational training to the local youth.
Niger Republic is a country with a vast landmark, it has a population of 27 million people, and a whopping 58% of this population are young people. It is one of the countries with the youngest population in the world. At the same time, it is the poorest country in the world, with widespread poverty and limited access to education. The country has a Muslim population of about 99.9%, while Christians are 0.24% of the population. Recently, on July 26 2023, the country experienced a coup d’état that deposed the democratically elected President, Mohamed Bazoum. Presently, General Abdourahamane Tchiani, the head of the military junta, is the Head of State.
The Niger mission is a baby mission and the same time, an important frontier for the Salesian Congregation.
The Archbishop of Niamey, Laurent Lompo, has entrusted to the Salesians the pastoral animation of the western sector of the diocese. This area is home to four Christian communities isolated due to the terrorism. The expectation is that the Salesian Province of ANN will organize a dynamic emergency pastoral care to support the internally displaced and accompany those who have remained in areas threatened by terrorism.
According to the Archbishop, the people have been waiting for the Salesians. The Salesians are a sign of hope to the people of Niger.
