Italy – A 5 Volume Series: Getting to know the Salesian Brother

25 October 2023

(ANS - Rome) - "Knowing Salesian Religious Brothers. A Collection of documents on the Salesian Coadjutor" is a collection published in 5 volumes by the Salesian University Library (LAS - Libreria Ateneo Salesiano – UPS - Rome), edited by the Br Marco Bay SDB and prsented at the end of June 2023 at Valdocco to the Rector Major and his Councillors and collaborators.

The miscellaneous work is a "'small shelf' in a few centimetres of thickness" that contains 162 contributions by qualified authors from 1872 to 2022 down through the period of 10 Rectors Major and 28 General Chapters. It is "full of references, contributions, important texts, all together, that put us in a position to know and deepen the charismatic identity and the development over time of the character of the Salesian lay Brother, the 'lay hand' of Don Bosco, of the Salesian coadjutor - we could say - in 'suit and tie', who lives and works together with the Salesian priests in the community, at home, in the courtyard, in the parish, at school, in the office, in the industrial technical schools and  in the streets...".

The collection certainly serves to promote, encourage, study, support and nourish a dialogue within the Congregation, between the various branches of the Salesian Family, with the civil and ecclesial society, together with the deepening of the traditional relationship between Salesian priests and Salesian Brothers. It aims to encourage the assimilation of Salesian history and organizational culture with an interdisciplinary slant: to contribute to the formative, vocational and pastoral projects that enhance Salesian pedagogy, especially aimed at young people and members in initial and ongoing formation.

The complete work, in 5 volumes and 2040 pages, is structured as follows:

Vol. 1 - 1872-1964;

Vol. 2 - 1966-1975;

Vol. 3 - 1977-1996;

Vol. 4 - 1997-2022;

Vol. 5 - Indexes
