Burundi - A workshop for educators working with street children organized by the Alumni of Don Bosco
Rukago, Burundi - October 2023 - Educators from the "EADB" (Children, Alumni & Friends of Don Bosco - Enfants des Anciens élèves et Amis de Don Bosco) project who work with the poor and street children took part in a training workshop organized by the Alumni. Various topics were addressed, including the figure of the Past Pupil, education of disadvantaged children, Salesian pedagogy and formation of Teachers. During the workshop, Ms. Honorine (psychologist and Past Pupil) addressed the gathering. Based on the studies of Freud and Piaget, she demonstrated that the uncomfortable situations in which many minors find themselves in, depended chiefly on a lack of affection. Fr Jean Paul Ndayikengurutse sdb, then, explained how Salesian pedagogy is a preventive pedagogy, which protects children from a negative future. Dwelling on the role of the Salesian educator, he then recalled how he must be characterized by his loving-kindness, availability, and presence. He insisted that “a good Salesian educator must therefore maintain Don Bosco's intentions, in educating 'good Christians and honest citizens'”. Finally, he concluded: “Salesian pedagogy must be based on aspects such as trust, welcoming and listening”.
