India - Training of Catechetical Leaders

The Education to Faith Dimension of DBYA of the SPCSA organised a three-day training programme from 26 to 28 August at Nitika, Kolkata, with a view of preparing trainers who can reach out to the catechists and catechism teachers of the various regions in their respective Provinces who do not use English as a medium of learning. The programme had the singular objective of equipping all those involved in the process of catechesis to fulfil their role effectively and professionally. 36 SDBs, sisters and lay trainers participated in the programme which was coordinated by Fr Sivy Koroth SDB, the SPCSA Coordinator for the Dimension of Education to Faith. The training programme was opened by Fr Patrick Laptcha, the Director of DBYA. Fr Biju Michael, the Regional Councillor for South Asia sent a video message and spoke of the importance of faith dimension in the Salesian mission for the young.

 

The programme prepared the trainers both theoretically and practically for a contextualised training programme for the catechists and catechism teachers back in their provinces. The major topics dealt with during the three days were the Tasks of Catechesis, the Content of Catechesis in CCC, Youcat and Docat, Family Catechesis, Youth Catechesis, Faith Responsibility of the Catechism Teacher, Preparing a Catechetical Lesson Plan, Using AI in Catechesis, Gospel Magic and Christian Action Songs. The resource persons included Frs Sivy Koroth, Kumuda Digal, Jayan Joseph, Franco Periera, Maria Anand, Arvind Khalkho, Alfred Paul and Dinesh.

Before departing, each province prepared an annual plan for the training of the catechists and catechism teachers in the various regions of their respective provinces and decided to focus on the training of catechists and catechism teachers as a priority during the academic year.
