Portugal – July 2023 - World Youth Day (WYD) Lisbon 2023 volunteers had the opportunity to be missionaries of the largest gathering of young people with Pope Francis and to bring WYD to all those who, due to their vulnerability, cannot attend. Organised in teams, the volunteers visited 657 institutions in the host dioceses of Lisbon, Santarém and Setúbal in the last week of July, involving almost 50,000 people from hospitals, day care centres, homes for the elderly and disabled, prisons or institutions supporting the homeless. By visiting these people, who cannot attend the event in person, the Missionary Gesture of WYD Lisbon 2023 aimed to bring the meeting closer to this most vulnerable population, with the animation and company of volunteers, but also to bring them closer to the event through prayer, and symbolically with the gift of a bracelet with the name of each of those visited in the institutions.
