Slovenia - Fire at the premises of Salesian publishers SALVE

26 September 2016

(ANS - Ljubljana) - In the afternoon of Friday 23 September a fire broke out at the headquarters of the Salesian publishers SALVE, located next to the Shrine of Mary Help of Christians. The administrative buildings and some work areas - around 200 square metres - were almost totally destroyed along with computer equipment. The store, located on the floor below, suffered significant damage.

The Superior of the Salesian Province of Slovenia, Fr Janez Potočnik, told ANS: "According to preliminary calculations, damages exceed 150,000 euro. The work of the publisher will be significantly impeded, because the repair work will take several months. We express our gratitude to God and to Mary Help of Christians that the confreres and staff have not suffered serious consequences and it was possible to stop the fire before it spread throughout the building to the church next door. We rely on your prayers and your help as far as possible.”

The Salesian publishers is called SALVE, which stands for: SAL (Salesians), V (vzgoja = education), E (evangelization). It has been active in publishing and in graphics, video production and sales, since the independence of Slovenia, officially 15 March, 1995, under the direction of Fr Herman Gregoric and Fr Branko Balazic. Previously, in fact, the publishing activities were not allowed, because the Yugoslav central government strictly controlled all activities of this kind and punished violators severely.

True to the spirit of the Salesian Congregation and of the Church in Slovenia, SALVE publishes catechetical aids, books and magazines for catechesis and parish magazines. It also produces CDs, DVDs, etc.

It is part of the mission carried out by the Salesians in Slovenia and, through the means of social communication, it educates and evangelizes especially in the field of catechesis and youth ministry.
