This was the first meeting that saw the involvement of every component of the C&NE Region, and it was held precisely in the sacred place where our Salesian charism began and underwent development. The confreres appreciated a circumstance where they were able to meet to share their experiences of Salesian life and activity in working groups and in a plenary Assembly. These days where they met and experienced communion marked a deepening of the Salesian identity in an increasingly secularised Europe.
The Rector Major, Fr Ángel Fernández Artime, his Vicar, Fr Stefano Martoglio, the General Councillors for various Sectors (Fr Ivo Coelho, Councillor for Formation, Fr Miguel Angel García Morcuende, Councillor for Youth Ministry, Fr Gildásio Don Santos Mendes, Councillor for Social Communication; Fr Alfred Maravilla, Councillor for the missions, Bro. Jean Paul Muller, Economer General), Fr Roman Jachimowicz, Regional Councillor for the Central and North Europe Region, Fr Joan Lluis Playà Morera, The Rector Major’s Central Delegate for the Salesian Family, presented their perspective on the progress of the Salesian Congregation’s “Project Europe”, noting both its strong and weak points, and offering challenges for responding to the “signs of the time” in contemporary Europe today with an eye to the future.
One of the priorities that emerged from the meeting was the formation of confreres, stressing the importance of consecrated life and the mission entrusted to individual Salesian communities, through the fundamental commitment of caring for the young and especially the poorest young people and those on the margins of society. The educative and pastoral commitment of the Salesians working closely with the laity and the entire Salesian Family has great relevance for realising the Salesian charism in Europe.
The Team Visit concluded with a solemn Eucharist celebrated on the feast of St Mary Domenica Mazzarello, and at which the Rector Major, Fr Ángel Fernández Artime, presided, in the presence of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians.
Those involved in the Team Visit appreciated the opportunity to meet together once again in in a calm fraternal atmosphere, as well as the opportunity for a deeper mutual understanding, after having shared a Retreat last year which was led by the Rector Major.
