Addressing the 126 South Asian members present, the Rector Major Fr. Ángel Fernández Artime, summarized that the team visit as an instrument of animation by the General Council and as an experience of communion in the congregation. He affirmed, “It is a precious moment for the 12 provincials and councillors of the South Asia region, to live and experience this communion. This makes us become more aware of the Charismatic identity and communion as brothers of the same family. We are here much more to listen and learn also from you, rather than to give you advice. I am convinced that Don Bosco and our Blessed Mother is accompanying us in this significant journey”.
The significant speakers of the day were Fr. Joe Mannath, who presented on the theme ‘the status of religious life in the region’. Fr. Biju Michael, the Regional Superior spoke about the ‘Status of the Salesian Region today and looking forward’. Fr. Ivo Coelho, the General councillor for formation and Fr Gildasio Mendes, the General Councillor for Social Communication presented on the theme ‘Growth in Charismatic Identity’. Based on the inputs of provincial chapters of the region, Fr Robert Pen, the formation delegate for South Asia presented a ‘SWOT’ analysis of the region. After each presentation, time was allotted for clarification and comments on the themes were also expressed. In the afternoon, the members went into their specific groups to discuss on the challenges and practical applications of living out the Salesian Charism and Charismatic Identity.
The reflections and lines of actions drawn up by the groups were presented at the common assembly. The lively interaction by the participants emphasized the richness of our Salesian charism and the importance of presenting it creatively presenting it to young people. The day concluded with the divine office and a good night by Fr. Roshan Miranda, the provincial of Sri Lanka. He shared about the challenging times the people of Sri Lanka were going through due to the Economic and Financial crisis that has befallen the whole nation.
