D.R. Congo - Salesians in Goma organize feast day of St. Francis de Sales for journalists and communicators
Goma, D.R. Congo - January 2023 - On January 24, on the occasion of the feast day of St. Francis de Sales, patron saint of journalists and communicators, the Commission for Social Communication of the AFC-EST Delegation "St. Joseph" organized, through the magazine "Jambo Vijana," a day of reflection for information professionals, journalists, communicators and writers in Goma. The central theme of the activity was "The ethics of new information and communication technologies" accompanied by two sub-themes "Media: resources and challenges" and "The contribution of environmental communication to social welfare." During the conference, the keynote speaker, Hilaire Maheshe, a researcher and professor of journalism, emphasized that the New Information and Communication Technologies are very important as they revolutionize the speed of access to information and its dissemination, but if misused, they convey distorted information. This day, celebrated in Goma since 2021 at the initiative of Fr. Jean-Pierre Muhima, SDB, has become an opportunity for men and women working in the media to reflect on the values transmitted by St. Francis de Sales. During the conference and discussion, Tuver Wundi, one of the facilitators, reminded participants of St. Francis de Sales' "ecstasy of action and life." For his part, Fr. Prosper Paluku, SDB, Director of the Salesian Community of ITIG and member of the Commission for Social Communication of AFC-EST, invited journalists and communicators in Goma to do journalism of truth by taking St. Francis de Sales as a model.
