Italy – "The choice is to stay together with the people": action of the Salesians in Ukraine narrated at Turin Book Fair

20 May 2022

(ANS - Turin) - A meeting will be held on Sunday, May 22, from 12 to 1 p.m. (UTC+2) at the Turin International Book Fair to tell about what the Salesians are doing in Ukraine to help the civilian population and in the neighboring countries where they are taking care of the reception. The City of Turin wanted to give a sign of closeness to the Ukrainian people in a booth called "City of Peace." The meeting titled "The choice is to stay together with the people" is organized by "Missioni Don Bosco," the Salesian Mission Office of Turin; and the Salesian NGO "Volontariato Internazionale per lo Sviluppo - VIS," as part of the broader coordination of Salesian entities that have joined forces to support on the ground the communities affected by the invasion and those displaced in neighboring countries.

Speakers at the meeting will include Fr. Daniel Antúnez, president of "Missioni Don Bosco"; Fr. Maksim Ryabukha, a Ukrainian Salesian from the "Mary Help of Christians" Vice-Province of Greek Catholic Ukraine, connected from Kyiv; Michela Vallarino, president of VIS; and Marco Faggioli, director of Missioni Don Bosco. The speakers will be moderated by Antonio Labanca of the Missioni Don Bosco press office.

The event is part of the program aimed at responding to the Ukrainian emergency put in place by Salesian entities active in international solidarity (Missioni Don Bosco, Fondazione DON BOSCO NEL MONDO, Fondazione Opera Don Bosco onlus, Fondazione Opera Don Bosco nel mondo, and VIS), which are coordinating aid to the many communities in Kyiv, Lviv, Zhytomyr, Dnipro, Odesa, Przemyślanya, Bóbrka, and Korosteszów, as well as in neighboring countries: Poland, Moldova, Hungary, Romania, and Slovakia.

Among the solidarity and awareness-raising initiatives carried out for Ukraine is also the one carried out last night, Thursday, May 19, as part of the National Cinema Museum Association's "Cinema for Ukraine" solidarity film festival. Indeed, at the Cinema Massimo in Turin, the film "Bad Road" by Natalija Vorozbyt, a Ukrainian nominee for the 2022 Academy Award, was screened, which tells four stories set along the streets of the Donbas at the height of the conflict, four different responses that people can make to survive the chaos of war. During the evening, which provided an opportunity to reflect in a raw way on the theme of war through cinema, funds were raised to support the Ukraine solidarity campaign of "Don Bosco Missions."
