The event provided a space for reflection on the current state of young people’s inclusion in the labor market. Furthermore, it served to sensitize the population to the importance of fostering the connection of educational agencies with the world of work and to support self-employment, as well as proposing initiatives that involve various social figures, entrepreneurs and political leaders, always with the sole purpose of improving opportunities for young people.
During the forum, the need to create legal mechanisms to coordinate and promote effective links was underlined. Furthermore, the promotion of educational and vocational training programs for young people was encouraged with an invitation to create mechanisms to facilitate access to employment and to foster the creation of decent jobs within the reach of this precious segment of the population of the nation.
Fr José Pastor Ramírez Fernández, Provincial of the “St John Bosco” Salesian Province of the Antilles, in his opening address of the event, said: “We must invest in the quality of education, and the education-work combination must be strengthened, monitored and evaluated in depth. This is a right of our young people; we cannot deny it to them. This is the only way to connect young people to their vocational dreams.”
The event was attended by senior officials from public and private institutions, including: Ministry of Labor, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Youth, Ministry of Higher Education, National Institute of Technical and Vocational Training (Infotep), Dominican Institute of Quality (INDOCAL) and the Technological Institute of the Americas (ITLA), the Business Sector and, obviously, the Salesians.
The event was attended by 140 people, recorded 520 live links through YouTube, and was also broadcast live on two national television channels.
