Brazil - The Salesian Family united by a passion for the poorest young people
Campos de Goytacazes, Brazil - September 2021 - In the last days of September, Fr Gabriel Romero, Councilor for the America South Cone Region, visited the Salesian community of Campos de Goytacazes, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, where he had the opportunity to meet some members of the Salesian Family. There, during the period of the Covid-19 pandemic, an experience of solidarity began that brought together the forces of the Past Pupils, Salesian Cooperators, Association of Mary Help of Christians (ADMA), Volunteers and lay people from the Chapel and the Boarding School. All together they expressed solidarity with the activities of the "São Pedro" Youth Center which operates daily in one of the city’s "favelas" (slum area), on the edge of the railway and the oratory of the Ururaí district, to where more than one hundred needy families have been transferred to. On the initiative of one of the school's girl student, and with the support of the Rectors, the students, teachers and parents have also mobilized resources in this solidarity campaign that seeks to cover some of the basic needs of many children, adolescents and young people who benefit at this Center. The Salesian Family has thus acted as a single family united in the mission for the youth.
