The prelature has so far had three Salesian Bishops. The area is home to over 149,000 inhabitants, of whom 85.9% are Catholics. "We thank God with all our heart for the bishops, priests, religious brothers and sisters, sons and daughters of God that over these 50 years have spent their lives generously," said the Apostolic Nuncio.
Bishop Guerrero welcomed the 12 bishops of the state of Oaxaca and neighbouring states, Fr Hugo Orozco Sánchez, Provincial of Mexico-México and Sister Myrna Rodriguez, FMA Provincial of Mexico-Monterrey, and a hundred priests. The guests attended the Eucharist accompanied by seven bands of musicians.
Fr Serafico José Rosales, Vicar General of the Prelature, read the Bull with which Pope Paul VI canonically erected the "Prelatura Mixepolitana" on 19 March 1966. It stated that Fr Braulio Sánchez Fuentes, SDB, was appointed Apostolic Administrator and first Bishop of this local Church. He was succeeded by Bishop Luis Felipe Gallardo, SDB, in 2001 and by Bishop Guerrero in 2007.
Quoting Don Bosco in reference to Mary Help of Christians, Bishop Guerrero said that "She did everything", and added that "it was a celebration for the Church, as the most obvious contribution to the Prelature is an integral evangelization, which includes, among other things, the mission, the promotion, education and care for the poor and the sick."
