Dominican Republic - Support for street children and migrants in Covid-19 era
Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic - April 2020 - Street children, especially migrants, who roam the streets of the city of Santo Domingo, receive attention through the Salesian work "Casa Pinardi", which is part of the "Yo También" program, with 30 years of service in the style of Don Bosco. In these times of health, economic and social crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, "Casa Pinardi" has seen the number of children and teenagers knocking on its doors double. They are offering them health care, food and an educational environment for integral development. The structure currently houses 25 young people integrated into the program on a permanent basis, half of whom are of Haitian origins. The "Yo También" program, created in 1990, has been collecting statistics since 1996 and has since reintegrated over 3,800 children and adolescents into their homes, adoptive families or other educational institutions.
