Italy – Evening of Spiritual Music and Prayer: A Journey of Hope Offered by the Musical Group “Sal.es”

20 January 2025

(ANS – Turin) – After a hectic afternoon of intense walking in pilgrimage, the participants of the 43rd Salesian Family Spirituality Days gathered at the basilica for an evening of prayer and music. It was an hour dedicated to music and spirituality, offered by the youth musical group “Sal.es,” with the goal of reigniting in the participants the following desires: a longing for God in their hearts; contemplating the fruitfulness of His love through the Cross; savoring the Lord in the Eucharist; reflecting on the wonders He accomplished through Don Bosco and Salesian holiness; and contemplating the holiness in Mary.

Sal.es is the name of a youth musical reality that began to develop around the Basilica of Mary Help of Christians in May 2021. It’s name conceals the objective: to be inspired by the holiness of St. Francis de Sales, for the depth that this figure represents and for the attention he dedicated to culture and the arts. But Sal.es (with the dot) also means "you are salt" in Latin. This naturally refers to the evangelical expression that encourages all of us to rise above mediocrity. Sal.es pursues this purpose by engaging with pieces of sacred music, polyphony, Gregorian chants, and high-quality folk music, particularly in reference to Mary, Mother Help of Christians.

This was also the case in Fatima on August 31 during the World Congress of ADMA, and similarly on Friday, January 17 in the Basilica, at the request of the Central Delegate of the Rector Major for the Secretariat for the Salesian Family, Fr Joan Luis Playa, and with the approval of both the Salesian community of Mary Help of Christians and the Vicar of the Rector Major, Fr Stefano Martoglio. Polyphonic pieces by Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina and other classical authors, Gregorian hymns, instrumental pieces, and some Marian compositions by the basilica's choirmaster enriched the evening. In the attentive silence of the participants at the 2025 spirituality days, the Basilica offered a genuine moment of prayer and beauty.
