Under the guidance of the AET Provincial, Fr Hailemariam Tesfay, and the Director of the Planning and Development Office, Salesian Brother Cesare Bullo, there have been intense and full days of meetings and work to bring together the resources available in the Province, the work of the PDO and VIS and the possibilities offered by the Italian Government's Mattei Plan for Africa, a strategic project of diplomacy, development cooperation and investment that sees the collaboration of companies and Third Sector realities.
The visit to works in Addis Ababa (the Bosco Children centre, and centres in Gotera and Mekanissa) and above all the mission in the Tigray region, a region to the north of Ethiopia, in the works in Adwa, Adigrat and Mekelle, were the focus of the commitment.
The Italian embassy in Addis Ababa also offered a warm welcome, a comprehensive operational picture of the projects already underway and the needs they identified, especially in the Tigray region, which is experiencing the consequences of the conflict that affected it from November 2020 to November 2022.
The meeting in the Nunciature and with the Bishop of Adigrat, Bishop Tesfaselassie Medhin, highlighted the pastoral needs and urgent issues on which to focus efforts.
Physical safety, food, health, immigration, depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorders are the fronts on which the Salesians and volunteers operate, in addition to the ordinary activities of school, vocational training, oratory, assistance for street children and parish ministry.
"Accompaniment paths are in place that do not end in a few months, but that need continuous support for several years and both human and financial resources lasting over time to produce significant impacts", Mauro Pitzalis, VIS Representative for Ethiopia, said.
