Colombia - Conclusion of Extraordinary Visit of Fr Hugo Orozco to Province of Bogotá

25 November 2022

(ANS - Bogota) - From August 30 to November 14, Fr. Hugo Orozco, Regional Councilor for Interamerica, made the Extraordinary Visit, on behalf of the Rector Major, to the "St. Peter Claver" Province of Colombia-Bogota (COB).

As part of the Visit, Fr. Orozco had the opportunity to meet with the Provincial Council, all the delegates and sector leaders, the lay people co-responsible for the mission, and the 15 local communities, where he spoke with the co-workers and youth. Dialoguing with all of them, he was able to learn about the work plan underway in the province and the challenges to be faced so that the Salesian mission will be increasingly effective among young people, to strengthen charismatic identity and thus verify the good progress of the implementation of the guidelines following the 28th General Chapter.

Over a period of two and a half months, Fr. Orozco held meetings, audiences, celebrations, and feast days according to the agreed schedule. With a great spirit of openness, simplicity, and availability, the Visitor was open to all proposals, but above all, he devoted himself to listening fraternally to all his confreres.

Fascinated by the pastoral reality of the COB Province, where people and especially young people are its greatest wealth, Fr. Orozco, in closing the Visitation, commented, "The first thing I would like to share is that I really liked the way of being of the children and young people in Colombia: it is easy to make friends with them, their spontaneity I liked a lot and, at times, they healed my heart. What has remained in my heart is their spontaneity, their easy ability to make friends, and their affection for Don Bosco."

A very special moment of his animation visit was the Eucharist he presided over in thanksgiving for the canonization of St. Artemide Zatti at the Shrine of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, with the participation of the Salesian Family and the youth of the Salesian Youth Movement.

"This marvelous experience remains in our hearts. We thank God for these beautiful days of accompaniment," commented the Salesians from the Office of Provincial Communication. "His simplicity, his timely words, his fraternity, and his instructions encourage us and fill us with hope to go forward. We have seen that we are in harmony with the Congregation."

In his words, "The biggest challenge we have is the mission: and I am not talking about physical spaces, but spaces of love. There is a lot of work and we have to have the ability to make decisions that will allow us to keep our mission of love always alive."

The concluding act of the Extraordinary Visit was the meeting with the Salesian community, a meeting in which he commented on the main lines of his final report and expressed his satisfaction with what he saw and experienced in the provincial community during the days of his stay.
