The post-novices robed the Rector Major with the traditional costume and gave him the traditional stick symbolizing the shepherd who flocks the sheep, along with the traditional shield, which is usually given to a king as a sign of authority. The traditional beating of the drums reserved for special visitors, was also played for the Rector Major at the airport.
On his arrival at the formation house at Makeni - Lusaka, the Rector Major was welcomed by the post novices and the young people in a solemn procession. The Rector of the community Fr. Vincent Tembo welcomed the gathering, which was followed by a variety of cultural programmes. Sr. Marie Claire Jean, the FMA provincial on expressing her sentiments affirmed, “Your visit during this 40th year of Salesian presence in Zambia is a moment of great blessing for the Salesian family. The Salesians who preceded us also welcomed us into this beautiful country and our journey has always been together and we are giving our best for the Salesian mission and the welfare of the young.”
The Rector Major was deeply touched by the gesture, of a 14 year old boy Michael Mbewe who surprised him with a beautiful pencil painting of the Rector Major’s portrait. The day concluded with a fraternal dinner around the Rector Major with representatives from various groups of the Salesian Family.
