The ceremony was attended by the Ambassador of the European Union to Mexico, Gautier Mignot; the High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi; the Resident Coordinator of the United Nations System in Mexico, Peter Grohmann; as well as the Coordinator General of the Mexican Commission for Aid to Refugees, Andrés Alfonso Ramírez Silva; the mayor of the city, Montserrat Caballero Ramírez; and the Rector of the "Proyecto Salesiano Tijuana", Fr Agustín Novoa.
During the ceremony, the importance of the joint work of international organizations, government and the civil society in favor of all those who arrive in Tijuana seeking refuge was emphasized.
In his speech, Fr Agustín Novoa, Rector of the "Proyecto Salesiano Tijuana", stressed the importance of not remaining in the shadows,or making those people who flee their places of origin remain in the shadows; rather, he called for a "social friendship" between all parties through which we try to promote the dignity of all of them. This would start with the document provided through this centre, which will offer them protection and open the doors to their coveted search for security and human development, in a legal and stable way for them and their families.
To conclude the event, a plaque was unveiled to commemorate the joint work of all the organizations mentioned.
The Salesians of Tijuana have worked in this process of uniting various agents in favor of the refugees, who are among the most vulnerable in the city. "Like our father Don Bosco, we, the Salesians, dream of a Tijuana that is always at the forefront of keeping its arms open to welcome all who come here, especially those who arrive seeking protection and security for their lives," commented Fr Novoa.
