Panama - President of Panama visits Don Bosco Technical Institute, delighted by warm welcome

(ANS - City of Panama) - On Thursday 19 September the Don Bosco Technical Institute received a surprise visit from the President of the Republic of Panama, Laurentino Cortizo, interested in getting to know first hand the progress in the restructuring of laboratories and curricular projects of the institute. The President emphasized the relationship he has always had with the school that teaches students from working class areas of the capital and the peripheries.

The institute's students and collaborators were encouraged and motivated by his visit. The notes of the Salesian hymns resounded across the gym, making President Cortizo feel very much at home. The words of welcome were given by Fr Dante De La Gaspera and by the student José Jiménez. The official poster and the invitation to the inauguration of "Expotecnia 2019" were presented, the fair a window for students to show the public the creativity and ingenuity of the technical and scientific projects they have developed.

The President visited the new mechatronics laboratory (former electromechanical laboratory), and Dr. Victor Costella, coordinator of the technical area, provided information on the work being carried out, plans and projects to which President Cortizo was very interested. The President promised that through the Institute for Training and Valorisation of Human Resources, 500 scholarships will be awarded, which include transportation, special and quality level courses, for the benefit of less affluent students so that they can study in the institute. Furthermore, public school students, apart from regular lessons, will be able to take technical courses to complete their formation.


The Don Bosco Technical Institute is the only school in the country that is accredited by the Ministry of Education as a technical training body, which allows it to develop programs and projects aimed at the formation of students, instructors and the general public.

Teacher training for vocational and technical schools in the nation will be carried out by the Don Bosco Technical Institute, which is considered as a model institution of technical education. Furthermore, laboratories and workshops with modern equipment will be restructured by the end of 2019.


At the end of the visit, students and teachers thanked the President with the Salesian joy that distinguishes them. The President told the students gathered in the gym, where he went on Sunday to attend Mass, that he was delighted by their warm welcome.
