Gniezno-Poznań, Poland - April 2016 - From 14 to 16 April, in the oldest Polish capital, Gniezno, and in Poznań, solemn official, civil and religious celebrations are being held for the 1050th anniversary of the baptism of Poland The celebrations include the National Assembly of the two Houses of Parliament, with the participation of the President of the Republic. Also participating is the Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin as papal legate.

Pope Francis himself, at the general audience last Wednesday, 13 April, referred to the historic event as he greeted the Polish pilgrims: "Together with the pastors and faithful I thank God for this historic event, which over the centuries has formed the faith, spirituality and culture of your homeland, in the community of peoples that Christ invited to participate in the mystery of his death and resurrection. Give thanks to the Lord - in the words of St. John Paul II - 'for the gift of having been - more than a thousand years ago - baptized in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, being immersed in the water that by grace perfects in us the image of the living God, the water which is a wave of eternity: "the source of water welling up to eternal life" (Jn 4:14). I ask God that the present generation and future generations of Poles remain faithful to the grace of baptism, giving witness to Christ and the Church. May the Merciful God bestow his blessing on all the Polish people at home and abroad! Praised be Jesus Christ!"
