Literacy education is obviously the first step towards embarking upon a successful educational journey: this is why the Spiritual Sons of Don Bosco concentrate their many efforts in this area and in a series of other initiatives aimed at giving young people the fundamental skills.
With this in mind, Salesian Missions used the donations received from its benefactors to support the creation of a Don Bosco Literacy Center in the village of Bualpui, in the Indian state of Mizoram, near the border with Myanmar. The school classrooms consisted of dilapidated sheds that hardly created a favorable learning environment. The new structure, on the other hand, now offers an environment of eight classrooms designed specifically for primary school children, so that they can now concentrate and study profitably.
In addition to traditional school lessons, Salesians worldwide are also known to promote the knowledge and development of music and the arts, to help young people cultivate their talents, increase their potential, foster their integral development.
Another example of its support activities to missions is Salesian Missions donating a piano to the students attending the Don Bosco Academy of Music and Fine Arts in Kochi, Kerala, which offers free courses to the most disadvantaged youngsters. Currently, there are about 100 students who are learning piano, keyboard, violin, guitar, drums, singing and more.
In a country like India, where almost 44% of the workforce is illiterate and less than 10% of the working age population has completed secondary education, Salesians offer young people opportunities that give them the chance to break the vicious circle of poverty and help them to contribute to the well-being of their families and communities.
