Italy - A group apartment renovated for Foreign Minors

15 November 2018

(ANS - Casale Monferrato) - A more welcoming structure, furnished with taste, rigor and sobriety, will now host Non-Accompanied Foreign Minors (MSNA) and male Italian minors in a path of semi-autonomy. Conceived and implemented two years ago, in collaboration with the residential community "Harambée", now the new "Group Apartment" (Gapp) is located within the Salesian structure with a greater capacity for receptiveness, that is, up to six people. In this way it wants to emblemize, in a concrete fashion, the welcoming spirit of the entire oratory and parish community.

The Salesian houses of Don Bosco have a clear educational style: "A Home that welcomes", "Parish that evangelizes", "School that initiates life", "Playground where to meet friends". The group apartment has also been established from this concept.

The objectives that characterize the journey of the children welcomed within our structure are clear: the accompaniment that we want to achieve serves to bring minors to personal autonomy, to social and cultural integration, to building relationships on the territory, to inclusion in school and professional or vocational paths.

Several volunteers from the parish and oratorian community help professional operators in these individualized paths, emphasizing with their presence the family atmosphere that they want to create around and within the apartment group.

In a climate that often shows hostility towards foreigners, this path of integration carried out at the Salesian center is a clear and visible testimony of welcome, a signal that aims to buttress and contrast the current climate, and instead aims at and works towards integration.

With different receptive capacities and with diversified modules, the Special Circumscription of Piedmont and Valle d'Aosta (ICP) can now count on three homes for the foreign minors, i.e., two in Turin, the "San Luigi" and "San Paolo" oratories, and that of Casale Monferrato. And in addition to these specific realities, there are countless oratories and vocational training centers that in these years have never looked at skin color or religious and cultural differences.

Fr Domenico Ricca, Delegate for the situations of marginalization and distress of the ICP Circumscription concludes: "It is only a matter of remaining faithful to Don Bosco's motto: 'My dears, I love you wholeheartedly, and it is enough for you to be young that I love you much.'"
