In the 90s the rural area of La Paz was isolated highland. There was no means of communication and people were totally uninformed. Ramiro Carlo, radio journalist with Sariri explains: "We used to listen only to Peruvian radio, because the province is located on the border with Peru. Therefore, given the need to provide a service to the population, two Salesians, Fr Dino Oselladore and Fr Miguel Ángel Aimar, started what is now called radio Sariri.
Thanks to the Salesians, the province of Escoma progressed greatly. The Salesians founded several institutions, such as the University, the Agro-Pastoral Training Centre, the Educational Unit, the Catechetical Centre and other centres of social importance. And one of the works that made a great impact was the radio.
The radio has so far achieved some important goals: It has given voice to the people to let them feel they are the architects of their own destiny. It has become a means of communication and unity between different communities; giving priority to human values of culture. It has helped to integrate the pastoral work and the promotion of the Salesian community in the different sectors.
"This means of communication has been very good for the parish and in particular for all those who live far away from it, because during the past 25 years the radio has been giving formation, evangelization, entertainment and communication between the different communities. Currently the radio has an audience of 10,000 listeners in Camacho province."
Radio Sariri is part of the radio network which broadcasts in the Aymara language and is part of the ERBOL network that consists of 180 radio stations.
Radio Sariri has been a voice, a companion, a friend and a messenger for many people, but above all, it was the best way to make God known. It continues to be "a voice that has not been turned off for 25 years."
