The Salesians in Cape Town have an Institute where they offer various training courses to provide a better future to thousands of young people. Through these short training courses, young people have access to apprenticeships in masonry, computing, carpentry, welding, sewing and training for work at sea. With this type of educational opportunities, more than 80% of students who complete the courses find a job. Every year training and employment opportunities are offered to 320 underprivileged youth.
In recent years, the Salesians were faced with huge expenses for electricity and also frequent power cuts that caused problems in the training of young people. This situation requires a global response according to new standards of sustainability, the protection of nature and energy conservation. The Salesians have developed a project to provide the Centre with a vast solar energy conversion system which represents a significant advance in the technological level of the place.
With this project, the Centre will have a continuous supply of electricity and will reduce the cost in electricity bills. This will facilitate the sustainability of the mission and improve the quality of education offered by the Salesians.
