Italy – Salesian Youth Synod: an experience with the voice of all young people

11 August 2024

(ANS - Turin) - The Youth Synod begins today. There are 376 participants; 292 young people have the right to vote in the Assembly. The other participants in the Synod, without the right to vote, are: the Rector Major and 45 Salesians: representatives of the Regions/responsible for content and entertainment, logistics, social communication, translators and technical staff; 19 FMA; 15 musicians and 5 lay technicians.

Important events on the first day of 11 August include: the official opening, the pilgrimage to Don Bosco's places, the meeting with the Moderators and Speakers of the Minor Circles (language groups) and the Mass in the Basilica of Mary Help of Christians. Presided over by the Rector Major.

At the time of registration, young people receive the Instrumentum laboris.  This is a basic document on which the participants' discussion will be based.  It brings together 117 points for reflection and does not suggest answers, but notes, articulates some of the insights that have emerged in the process carried out in the provinces, opens up questions and invites deeper reflection. Therefore, it is a document for the discernment of the young participants in the Synod. The document is divided into three parts and is available in several languages.

It is a document, the fruit of listening, discernment and reflection by young people from all the Regions. It is an articulate but essential text, conceived above all as a support for the method by which the language groups and the assembly will be called upon to work and to encourage prayer, dialogue, discernment and the maturing of a consensus.

It is useful to point out how in the Instrumentum laboris some important avenues of reflection stand out: relationships, identity, faith, society, vocation, commitment, family, formation, love, and many others. All this invites us to work in an orderly fashion, taking note of reality, identifying priorities, imagining paths of growth, making ourselves available to understand the complexity of the problems and to seek solutions that involve us all. Not everything can be done and not everything right away, but what is important is to steer the path and discern those small or large steps that go in the right direction desired by the Gospel.

During the group or small circle work, it will not necessarily be necessary to discuss all the points that are proposed in the points of the instrumentum laboris, but from these it will be necessary to discern the aspects considered most important and formulate concrete and possible proposals. Each working group will approach the reflection in such a way as to allow an in-depth and unhurried discussion. The work of the groups, which will have a moderator and a rapporteur, will be communicated during the assembly, to be followed by an appropriate time for everyone to express further questions and proposals, so as to allow a wide circulation of ideas as possible.
