The two Salesian mission stations are entrusted with two parishes, which have about 12,000 faithful, and 7 Salesian primary and secondary schools, with almost 5,000 students, involving 4 different groups of the Salesian Family (3 Daughters of Mary Help of Christians, 2 Missionary Sisters of Mary Help of Christians, 22 Salesian Cooperators and some Past Pupils of Don Bosco). Most of the lay collaborators of the mission are Catholics and the only daily Oratory active in the AFM Vice-Province, in Maputsoe, is a living icon of Valdocco, which welcomes hundreds of young people every day, including those of other religions and Christian confessions.
So far there are 4 professed Salesians from Lesotho, including three priests and a Salesian brother Among the new generations, there is a pre-novice and an aspirant originally from Lesotho, which is indicative of the good vocational potential among young people. It is no coincidence, in fact, that the Provincial Delegate who will participate in the Youth Synod, scheduled for Colle Don Bosco from 11 to 16 August, is a Leader at the Oratory in Maputsoe. In addition, the lay missionary volunteers who collaborate with the Salesians will celebrate their 30th anniversary in 2024.
During the numerous meetings and personal meetings with young people, lay people and members of the Salesian Family, Fr Václav Klement, Superior of the Blessed Michael Rua Vice-Province of Southern Africa (AFM), found a strong desire for Salesian spirituality. A greater presence of Salesians is also required to assist young people who struggle with the different problems of modern society, from drugs to unemployment.
In other words, Don Bosco's vocational and foundational dream is more alive today than ever in Lesotho. "We accompany our Lesotho community in its fruitful vocational animation and prepare to welcome other Salesian missionaries from other Provinces" they write from Lesotho. "The fruits are abundant, but those who collect them are few."
