The event started with the story of Tetiana Romanchenko, who shared her experience of integration in Belgium after fleeing Ukraine. She underlined both the difficult moments, as well as the inspiring achievements, including the education and social life of her children in the migrant community in Belgium.
Later, a panel on best practices for integration of people with a migrant background was moderated by Claudia Bonamini (JRS Europe). Among the speakers:
Fr Pedro Ayala Sdb (Youth Ministry Delegate of the Salesian BEN Province) presented the projects and holistic approach implemented in De Takel Don Bosco, a Salesian Youth centre in Oostende. Fr Ayala highlighted the importance of listening and safe spaces for youngsters, interreligious and multicultural dialogue, targeted workshops and positive messages.
Eliane Maes (Saint Egidio) showed the achievements of the humanitarian corridors that allowed refugees to arrive in Belgium, where they support their integration through a community-based engagement.
Geert Bukkems (Global Environment Champions and partner of JRS Europe in the Change Environment programme) presented a project that aims to empower climate refugee activists in the Global South and connect communities for joint actions against climate crisis.
In the end of the evening, the participants enjoyed a networking session and snacks prepared by a refugee entrepreneur from Ukraine.
Additionally, on 20 June, DBI is going to moderate a reflection moment after the screening of the movie “Io Capitano”, organised by the Chapel for Europe.
