Italy – The new facilities of the Salesian General Postulation

06 June 2024

(ANS – Rome) – In the restructuring plan for Headquarters, the Rector Major with his Council decided to locate the rooms related to the Salesian General Postulation in the Zeffirino Namunucurà community in Via della Bufalotta in Rome.

The project was designed and supervised by architect Toti Cameroni. Having identified the space for the placement of the Postulation rooms, originally comprising a long and wide corridor and a large hall, then came the study of the distribution of the same, according to the required needs. The final solution was designed and implemented as follows:

The library with full-height bookshelves divided into 40x40 cm squares that completely cover the walls. The purpose is to collect and preserve the various publications related to the figures of holiness, in the knowledge that the lives and writings of the saints have been frequent reading among the faithful since antiquity, giving rise to conversion and desire for a better life: they reflect the splendour of the goodness, truth and charity of Christ. This area also lends itself well to personal research, hosting groups and meetings.

From here we move on to the reception area, which is intended to be a space for spirituality and meditation, as in the visits to the monasteries of Mount Athos, where the guest was first introduced to the chapel of the relics of the saints: that is where the heart of the monastery was and from there came the inducement to holiness for the monks.

In this space, a series of small showcases has been created that throw light on reliquaries or objects of value inherent to Salesian holiness. The right wall is covered with wooden paneling with inserted replaceable panels that represent some of the saints, blesseds, venerables and servants of God of the Salesian Family.

A door leads to the largest room of the Postulation: the archives. A compactor of 640 linear metres allows the storage of many documents related to the different processes of Beatification and Canonisation. A long chest of drawers is placed under the windows: pictures and liturgical vestments are located there.

A small corridor from the reception, where one can admire canvases and paintings along the walls, leads first into two bright offices with furnishings and then into the custody of the relics. In this area too the furniture fills the walls, cabinets and drawers hold the relics and liturgical vestments.

A depository and a small room used as a break area complete the facilities.

On the occasion of this event, Fr Pierluigi Cameroni, Postulator General for the Causes of Saints in the Salesian Family, recalled how "the opening and blessing of these premises reminds us that we are custodians of a precious legacy that deserves to be known and valued. In addition to the liturgical and celebrative aspect, we must fully exploit the spiritual, pastoral, ecclesial, educational, cultural, historical, social, missionary... potential of our Causes. Holiness recognised, or in the process of recognition is already the realisation of a radical gospel approach and fidelity to Don Bosco's apostolic project, to be looked at as a spiritual and pastoral resource; on the other hand it is a provocation to live faithfully one's vocation to be willing to witness love to the end. Our Saints, Blessed, Venerable and Servants of God are the authentic embodiment of the Salesian charism and the Constitutions or Regulations of our Institutes and Groups in the most diverse times and situations, overcoming that worldliness and spiritual superficiality that undermine our credibility and fruitfulness at the root."
