26 March 2024

(ANS – Sliema) – On Sunday March 24th, 100 cyclists and volunteers  participated in a charity bike ride to support Hospice Malta organized by Friends of Don Bosco Malta which represents the past pupil movement. This is the first edition of a new annual initiative which marks the dies natalis of Alberto Marvelli, a past pupil of Don Bosco who was a true hero of charity and an avid cyclist using his bike to give donations to the poor.

The cyclists embarked on their journey early in the morning, covering a scenic 25 km route from Savio College to St Patrick’s School which are two Salesian schools. The route, carefully planned, offered cyclists not only a physical challenge but also breathtaking views of Malta’s picturesque landscapes. Thanks to the efforts of all involved, a substantial sum was collected which was donated to Hospice Malta who provide care and support to terminally ill patients and their families.

For this event, the GEX representative of past pupils from Ukraine Mykhailo Dziubii who participated in the Bike Ride, "It was a pleasure to be part of this event and share Don Bosco’s mission by showing solidarity and giving back to others, especially the Hospice, and having fun at the same time"

The President of the World Confederation of Past Pupils of Don Bosco, Bryan Magro said that “this initiative will become an annual event for the past pupils and friends of Don Bosco in Malta as it is a manifestation of solidarity with those in need and an occasion to unite together to mark the memory of Alberto Marvelli. We will also explore collaborating with other past pupils and friends of Don Bosco from other countries in similar events.”

The next solidarity initiative by the Friends of Don Bosco Malta will be a solo cycling trip by David Gauci, a past pupil of Savio College and active member of the National Council, who will cycle over 850 kilometres on the route of the Cammino di Santiago di Compostela in Spain with money being collected to fund the residence for homeless youth managed by the Friends of Don Bosco, Malta.
