The Extraordinary Visitation is an experience of communion of each individual Province or Vice-Province with the Rector Major – and through him, with the entire Salesian Congregation. Every six years the Successor of Don Bosco sends a confrere as Visitor who, in his name and with his authority, visits every single Salesian house and every educative and pastoral community. The Rector Major called for this visitation in June and commissioned Fr Perez Godoy, Regional Councillor for the Mediterranean, to carry out this valuable task.
Starting from September, the Extraordinary Visitor met the more than 250 Salesians and the many more lay people in the educative and pastoral communities in Salesian houses in Liguria, Tuscany, Marche, Abruzzo, Lazio, Umbria and Sardinia, coming into contact with the best resources and with the efforts of many different situations which try daily to be Don Bosco's living presence among the children and people entrusted to Salesian communities.
After an intense six-month visit, Fr Pérez Godoy left each community and the entire Circumscription with a report on the state of health of the Salesian charism embodied in these places. Both in the meeting of 10 March with the Provincial Council, and in the one on 11 March with all the Rectors, the Extraordinary Visitor encouraged the Salesians to continue their journey of fidelity to Don Bosco, to have a sense of the Educative and Pastoral Community and the ability to live together, Salesians and lay people, sharing responsibility for the spirit and mission of Don Bosco; and to look hopefully at the personal and communal, social and ecclesial, youthful situation and with regard to their own consecrated life.
The meeting with the Rectors concluded this Visit, leaving everyone with the strong invitation to continue dreaming together with that nine-year-old boy who inspired and continues to inspire the work for the good of young people and for their salvation.
