India – The "Green Hands" initiative inspires children to cultivate a deeper connection with nature
Chennai, India – February 2024 – "Green Hands", one of the main environmental education initiatives carried out by the SURABI project of the Salesian Province of Chennai (INM), has recently involved many children in a nature camp that took place in the picturesque hills of Yercaud, Tamil Nadu. This immersive experience, held on 28 and 29 February at the Yearcaud Retreat Centre, aimed to cultivate a deeper connection between children and nature. A total of 64 enthusiastic participants, aged 6 to 8, accompanied by 15 teachers and 8 volunteers participated in the camp, during which lectures and workshops were held and a fascinating excursion into the nearby forest. The days opened with a welcome speech by Fr Joseph Leo, Director of SURABI, and continued with other illustrious interventions, such as one by Fr John Christy Irudayam, Provincial Delegate for Youth Ministry, who explained to the children the teachings of Pope Francis on climate change, and another by Fr John Wilson, who provided valuable information on the unique landscape of Yercaud. At the end of the initiative, the children received a certificate, which represents the culmination of a program that has expanded children's understanding of nature.
