Italy – "In the face of cultural changes, what kind of fraternal life and Salesian mission for today?"

16 February 2024

(ANS – Rome) – The cycle of events in the series "What kind of Salesians for the youth of today?" continues, on the Action Programme for the Salesian Congregation after the 28th General Chapter. On Saturday, 17 February 2024, Fr Silvio Roggia, Rector of the Zefirino Namuncurá community in Rome will speak, called to offer ideas and insights starting from the theme "In the face of cultural changes, what kind of fraternal life and Salesian mission for today?"

While around the world the Salesian Provinces and Vice-Provinces are holding their Provincial Chapters, and the Congregation is preparing for the 29th General Chapter, it is essential to remember not only Don Bosco's Dream at Nine Years of Age, but also what the previous Chapters have said about the Salesian charism. For example, at the end of the 28th General Chapter, in the eight action guidelines, the Rector Major highlighted that the community is the first place of formation. Without good relations among Salesians, between Salesians and the laity and with young people, it is impossible to put Don Bosco's charism into practice.

In the Letter from Rome of 1884 Don Bosco recalled: "Familiarity brings affection and affection brings confidence". Accepting our being immersed in a time of change, what does it mean to renew the Salesian formation style, thinking about it in a personalised, holistic, relational, contextual and intercultural way? What is the greatest challenge in forming young Salesians and lay people today who are passionate about the education of young people? How do we achieve formation that is crafted? These are the questions that will seek an answer in the interview with Fr Silvio Roggia, who in addition to seeing to the formation of about 50 young Salesians from all over the world, in close collaboration with the General Councillor for Formation, has also coordinated the work of drafting the new Ratio Fundamentalis.

Simply log in from 9 am to 10:15 am (UTC+1) on ANSChannel (ans's YouTube channel) or on donboscoitalia's Facebook page, where the broadcast will remain available for viewing at a later date.

The current one is the fourth cycle of events in the series "What kind of Salesians for the youth of today?", all promoted by the Conference of Salesian Provinces of Italy (CISI) - Formation Sector, and by the  “Living Tabernacles” Study Centre. In this  2023-2024 pastoral year, the meetings are dedicated to exploring the fourth Action Guideline on “formation to be Salesian pastors today” and, at the same time, considering the theme of General Chapter 29, to think about what it means to form Salesians “Passionate about Jesus Christ, dedicated to young people”.
