Brazil – The perpetual profession of three young Salesians marks the last day of the Rector Major's visit to Juazeiro do Norte

06 February 2024

(ANS – Juazeiro do Norte) – The final meetings of Cardinal Ángel Fernández Artime, Rector Major of the Salesians of Don Bosco, took place at Juazeiro do Norte in the Brazilian State of Ceará on Sunday 4 February 2024. It was the sixth and final day of the Animation Visit to the St Aloysius Gonzaga Salesian Province of Brazil-Recife (BRE).

The 10th Successor of Don Bosco met several Provincials of Brazil and the Coordinators of the Salesian Family at 10 a.m., in the auditorium of the São João Bosco Institute. On this occasion, Card. Fernández Artime stressed the importance of assigning the posthumous qualification of Salesian Cooperator to the Servant of God, Father Cícero Romão Batista, conferred the previous day, and also addressed a message of encouragement, perseverance and gratitude to the members of the Salesian Family who were present.

In the middle of the afternoon, the Rector Major wanted to meet young people from the Articulação da Juventude Salesiana (the Salesian Youth Movement) from all over the northeast of the country. Sitting in a circle around the 10th Successor of Don Bosco and conversing informally with him, the young Salesians had the opportunity to talk to the Rector Major about all their doubts, anxieties and concerns; and he responded to their questions calmly and in a friendly way, embracing each of the young people who questioned him.

Then, at 7 pm,  in the church of the Bom Jesus in Horto – dedicated just the day before – the cardinal presided at the Eucharistic celebration and the Perpetual Profession of three young Salesians.

The rite of profession began after the proclamation of the Gospel. The professed asked to serve God throughout their lives within the Salesian Society. The Rector Major then prayed, asking God the Father to grant them the grace to make this special covenant with Christ. During the homily, Fr Á.F. Artime reflected on the time that Christians dedicate to their faith and to helping others. "I think that after the beautiful celebration we are living, we must return home with a heart full of desire to live as disciples of the Lord Jesus" he exclaimed.

He continued with the rite of perpetual religious profession, through the questions of commitment, to which the candidates responded with a firm "yes". And immediately afterwards, Gabriel Ferreira, Pedro Xavier and Wellington Martins lay prostrate on the floor while the litanies were being sung. They then received candles and read the profession formula, signed the record of the event and were welcomed by the perpetually professed Salesians present.

At the end of Mass and Perpetual Profession, Wellington Martins, one of the three newly professed, proclaimed on behalf of all three: "Now we are Salesians of Don Bosco forever. This does not mean that the journey is over, on the contrary, now our daily ‘yes’ has an even greater motivation, given what we have promised here, before the Church and the people of God, gathered here."
