At the time of being nominated, Fr Sebastian is serving as Provincial Council member, Delegate of the Province for Salesian Family and Past Pupils, Schools and Legal Aid. He has been serving as the Principal of Don Bosco School, Guwahati since 2015 and has completed two terms as the Rector of the same house. Prior to this he has served as Parish Priest at Jirikinding and Haflong and as principal of Don Bosco School Haflong. He began his priestly ministry at Mawlai, Shillong, serving as the Assistant Parish Priest of Mawlai parish. He has thus gained rich experience of pastoral work in parishes and educative work in the schools as well as administrative experience as Administrator of Don Bosco School Guwahati. His experiences has seen him serve in some of the most rural and the most urban parts of the Province.
A missionary from the southern state of Kerala where he was born at Kottayam in the diocese of Palai, Fr Sebastian Kuricheal made his novitiate and first profession in 1978 at Shillong. He pursued his philosophical studies at Sonada in the Province of Kolkata. He completed his theological studies from Sacred Heart Theological College Shillong.
Fr Sebastian is known for his love for the poor and commitment to the Salesian mission for the young especially the poor. His affable ways have made a large pool of friends in the ecclesiastical circles and civil society. He is described by his confreres as a calm, serene, and genuine Salesian who combines a simple and friendly approach with sharp intellectual and administrative capabilities and an indomitable capacity for committed hard work.
Fr Sebastian will be the 13th Provincial of the Province of Guwahati.
