India - Walkathon for Child Rights Awareness in Dimapur

In a powerful demonstration of unity and unwavering dedication to safeguarding the Rights of Children, Dimapur, Nagaland, witnessed an inspiring walkathon organized by AIDA for a Child-Friendly Dimapur on 23 September. The event was designed to raise awareness about the fundamental rights of children, foster community solidarity, and champion the cause of a pristine and secure environment for the younger generation. ANMA (Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh) Integrated Development Association (AIDA), the social development wing of the Salesian Province of Dimapur, under the Child-Friendly Dimapur initiative, organized the walkathon with the theme, One Step Towards Creating a Clean and Safe Environment for Children. The walkathon began from Dimapur City Tower Circle to the Don Bosco Higher Secondary School campus had an impressive assembly of nearly 200 participants, comprising children, youth, and adults.

The event involved Mr Sangto Longchar, Project Assistant from Dimapur District Legal Service Authority (DDLSA), as the special guest. In his keynote address, Mr Longchar elucidated on the role and functions of the National Legal Services Authority, shedding light on crucial legislations aimed at safeguarding children's interests, including The Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection) Act, Child Marriage Act, and POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act).
 
Mr. Longchar underscored the event's overarching theme, emphasizing the indispensable need for a hygienic and secure environment to foster the holistic development of children. He expressed his profound gratitude to AIDA for the commendable initiatives. He called upon all participants to assume their roles as responsible individuals in the mission to create child-friendly cities.
 
In the concluding remarks, Father Nebu Mathew, the Rector of Don Bosco Campus, Dimapur, contemplated the significant advancements in child rights over the years. Drawing poignant parallels between the past and present, he underscored the crucial significance of the rights enshrined in Article 24 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. He commended children, youth, and adults alike for their unwavering dedication to raising awareness and urged them to become catalysts of change in nurturing the growth and development of children.
 
Dr. Alem Sangtam, an Assistant Professor at Discipleship Bible College and President of the Nagaland Theological Colleges Association, invoked blessings through scripture, adding a spiritual dimension to the event. Ms. Leishen Phom, representing Child Rights Club members, provided insights into the diverse activities carried out as part of the children's campaign. Father Kamil Horo, SDB, the Rector of Don Bosco Paglam in Arunachal Pradesh, delivered words of encouragement. The Explora Youth Club Dimapur generously sponsored packaged drinking water for the participants.
 
As the event drew to a close, Father N. Angel Kuldeep, SDB, Associate Director of AIDA, extended a heartfelt vote of thanks. The walkathon transcended being just a symbolic gesture; it stood as a testament to the community's commitment to crafting a safer and cleaner environment for the generations to come. It was a stride toward a brighter future for Dimapur's children.
