Italy – Aid to schools and displaced persons with funds raised by the Salesians

14 July 2023

(ANS – Sesto San Giovanni) – The funds raised by Sesto San Giovanni's Don Bosco Social Works educative and pastoral community have been transformed into several concrete projects. For a number of months, students, families, teachers and Salesians at the Lombard educational centre have collected donations worth 38 thousand euro, which will become tangible aid for social programs supported by the different sectors of the school. Several humanitarian projects will be supported from just one school, on behalf of many children in 4 different countries on three continents.

With the support of the school, for example, a bus was purchased to transport about 400 students from 30 Indian villages in rural Sayalkudi – a village in Ramanathapuram district, Tamil Nadu State, India. In this way even the poorest families will be guaranteed continuation of their children's journey of education.

The funds will also contribute to the construction and preparation of a mechanics workshop in Luanda, capital of Angola, a megalopolis of 11 million inhabitants: the teenagers who will be welcomed at the Casa Muxima centre will have a safe place to live and overcome their deficiencies in basic education in order to follow three years of complete vocational training, so they can earn a living through decent jobs and abandon street life for good.

Also in the educational field, in Ethiopia, the funds raised by the young people of Sesto San Giovanni will continue to help works at the Meskelle Yesus Salesian elementary school in Dilla, which offers the poorest children a quality education, guarantees a meal a day and provides the necessary health and hygiene education. Here the resources collected by the Salesians at Sesto will be used to replace the current bathrooms, insufficient for a population of about 1,000 students.

Finally, Ukraine cannot be left out of solidarity projects. With the support of the Don Bosco Social Works, there has been a contribution to the creation of a multifunctional space to be used as a shelter, and to the various activities organised by the Salesians in Kiev in support of internally displaced people. When the war is over, Don Bosco's Sons already have plans to convert the shelter into a small underground theatre.
