29 May 2023

(ANS – Sliema) - The long awaited book on the 110 years history of the Salesian Brigade in Malta was launched at their camp premises, in front of a sizable crowd including present and past members of all ages. The Salesian Brigade was founded in 1910 in the Oratory in Sliema opened by Don Rua in 1908.  This Salesian Catholic lay organisation is open to children and young people.  Its mission is to care and challenge young people for life through a programme of non-formal learning based on the Salesian Spirit and the Catholic teaching.

On this special occasion, the Salesian Brigade published a book compiling its long history of over 110 years highlighting how this Salesian organisation was an essential part of the Salesian Oratory in reaching out to children and young people and providing them with the Salesian educational approach.

The author of the book, Mr. Joe Camilleri spent years researching the details of the history and collecting valuable photographs which are now recorded in this voluminous book.  Mr. Leonard Falzon, the current leader of the Salesian Brigade, thanked Mr. Joe Camilleri for his dedication and the many hours of research and writing to be compiled in this publication.  He acknowledged and showed his gratitude to the many volunteers who over the years have committed so much of their time and energy to educate the young.  "It is through the devotion of these volunteers, many of them past pupils and friends of Don Bosco of the Salesian Oratory, who have written this history, and more importantly, acted as Salesian educators to many children and young people who became upright citizens and good Christians".

Present for the launch of the book was the World President of Past Pupils of Don Bosco, Mr. Bryan Magro, who was an active member of the Salesian Brigade, "The Salesian Brigade is a good practice of how past pupils and friends of Don Bosco fulfill their mission in educating the young.  It is the mission of past pupils to be active in Salesian work - this was the expressed desire of Don Bosco when speaking with the old boys' from Valdocco who were celebrating his annual feast day on the 24th June.  There is no doubt that the Salesian Brigade is one of the best practices of our mission with young people, among many around the world, which are led by past pupils and friends of Don Bosco".
