DR Congo - War-displaced persons returned to Don Bosco Shasha receiving food donations from Salesians
Shasha, DR Congo - April 2023 - On Thursday, 20 April, 320 IDP families confined to the Salesian camp of the "Don Bosco Shasha" work received food aid. The initiative was organized under the auspices of the "Internally Displaced Persons Emergency Coordination," of the AFC-EST Delegation. Salesians distributed cornmeal, beans, table salt, vegetable oil and soap. This distribution was facilitated by the help received from the Salesian Mission Office in Madrid, Spain, "Misiones Salesianas." It covered the elderly, people with disabilities, nursing mothers, and pregnant women. This is the second major distribution of aid to categories of people since their return to the Salesian site almost a month ago. In early March, displaced people and Salesians left the area following clashes between warring parties. The displaced people face hunger and precarious housing, hygienic and sanitary conditions. The "Don Bosco Shasha" IDP camp is facing a severe shortage of drinking water. This further exposes its occupants to waterborne diseases. Several visibly malnourished children and mothers gather at the entrance of the Salesian house, hoping to find bread and peace there. The Salesians are trying to rekindle their hope as best they can. For now, peace and security are still not possible in this part of the country, and there are still armed clashes in various areas creating fear and pain for the displaced.
