Germany - Meeting of leaders of Pre-Novitiates of Central and Northern Europe Region
Munich, Germany - March 2023 - Salesians in charge of the Pre-Novitiates of the Central and Northern Europe Region of 7 Provinces - Austria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Germany, Great Britain, Poland, Slovenia - and of the Vice-Province of Malta met in Munich's "Salesianum" from March 27-30. Together with Fr. Francisco Santos of the Formation Sector and the Novice Masters from Italy, Poland, and Slovakia, who were invited to the first day, the participants discussed and reflected on how Provinces and Formators can properly prepare candidates, aspirants, and especially the pre-novitiates for the novitiate period; what criteria are needed and how good accompaniment and orientation can be ensured. On the second day, together with Fr. Silvio Roggia, Director of the Theological Studentate "Gerini" of the Salesian Pontifical University of Rome (UPS), the draft of the new Ratio on the Pre-Novitiate was studied. On the following day, the particularities and affinities of the Prenovitiates of the Central and Northern European Region were elaborated, offering a positive view of their diversity and richness. The meeting, discussion, and debate on the pre-novitiate were deeply marked by fraternity, optimism, and constructiveness, but also by the gravity, importance, and concern that young people have good, qualified, and Salesian accompaniment. The meeting concluded with a visit to the Dachau concentration camp, where more than 30 Salesians of Don Bosco were imprisoned during the Nazi regime. Grateful for the hospitality in Munich and in the German Province, the participants returned home to their communities, loaded with new ideas and suggestions for successful vocational pastoral care and accompaniment of young people.
