27 January 2023

(ANS - Algeciras) - On Wednesday, January 25 in Algeciras, Spain, a gunman attacked several people in two churches in the city, causing several injuries in the San Isidro chapel, including Salesian Fr. Antonio Rodríguez Lucena, and then murdering the sacristan of the nearby Nuestra Señora de la Palma parish, Diego Valencia. Regarding the whole affair, the Salesians of Algeciras issued a statement, in which they also said that the wounded Salesian was operated on and declared out of danger on the same day Wednesday and that as early as Thursday 26 he was discharged from the hospital.

Conversing with Fr. Juan Francisco Huertas, Director of the Salesian community, Fr. Rodríguez himself had initially commented, "Thank God everything has passed and I am waiting to be discharged, to continue celebrating the feast of St. John Bosco." He then gave thanks for the many expressions of affection and messages of concern for his health. The Salesian also asked for "a lot of serenity, which I have," and then urged, "Let us never lose heart, because to animate our lives there are always God and Mary Help of Christians."

The Community and the entire Salesian Family of Algeciras commented, "We express the strongest condemnation of all forms of violence, which cannot find a place in the society in which we live and continue to pray for the eternal repose of Diego Valencia, sacristan of the Church of La Palma, a very dear and committed person. We want to show our closeness and affection to his family, the diocese of Cádiz, and the society of Campo de Gibraltar so that, together, we continue to engage in the pursuit of the common good."

The communiqué from the Salesians of Algeciras was updated yesterday noting that "Antonio Rodríguez - pictured center - was discharged at noon on January 26. He is now back in the community, surrounded by his confreres."
