RMG – Getting to know Don Bosco: films, songs, photos, dreams and insights on the Saint of Youth

20 January 2023

(ANS - Rome) - In January, which culminates with the feast day of Don Bosco, it is a tradition in all Salesian houses and throughout the Salesian Family to approach the celebration of the Father and Teacher of Youth through various paths of preparation: from the more traditional and spiritual ones, such as the Novena of Don Bosco, to the more creative ones, which involve young people in the most diverse playful or artistic activities, with tournaments and festivals of all kinds. ANS, the Salesian news agency, also intends to make its contribution to this global animation movement in honor of Don Bosco by publishing various in-depth articles about him in the coming days.

Don Bosco is not only heritage of the Salesians, nor only of the Salesian Family. On this, the Rector Major, Fr. Ángel Fernández Artime, has been very clear, and has said so on multiple occasions. And indeed, Don Bosoco has inspired artists of all kinds: from the world of film and music, theater...

His image, significant and well known as early as the 19th century, became more and more widespread and affirmed in the 20th century, and at the beginning of the third millennium we can say without fear of being contradicted that Don Bosco is almost an international brand, synonymous with education and development, evangelization and service to young people, especially those most in need, at-risk, in danger.

That is why starting tomorrow, Saturday, January 21, and until January 31, the date of his death and liturgical commemoration, ANS will be marking his many portraits in various ways:

  • - Don Bosco portrayed in photos with greater or lesser adherence to his original features, and in his best-known versions handed down to posterity;
  • - Don Bosco represented by the main film works that have immortalized his intense and long life, his social action in the Turin of his time, as well as his many teachings;
  • - Don Bosco as represented in music and sounds in some of the most celebrated pieces in the Salesian world internationally;
  • - Don Bosco as performed on the world’s stages in several of the most celebrated musicals dedicated to him;
  • - the Don Bosco that emerges by delving into some of the many aspects of this multifaceted figure, such as Don Bosco the Dreamer, the Don Bosco Communicator, the Don Bosco who still fascinates millions of people around the world.

This collection of articles shall certainly not be a series capable of collecting or summarizing everything that has been produced in recent years on a figure so rich for the Church and for all humanity; but it aims to be a useful tool for those who in these days are preparing to celebrate him, so that they may find among our pages prompts and suggestions for further study and sharing.
