The Rector Major visited the Church of Adolescent Jesus and then the Santa Chiara House, located in the historic and multi-ethnic Ballarò neighborhood. Welcoming Fr. Ángel Fernández Artime, and illustrating the beauty and joy of living in a place that is enriched by the cultural diversity and various ethnicities of the neighborhood, were Fr. Domenico Luvarà, the Salesian community, and the Pastoral Education Community. The difficulties, however, of living in a place where school dropouts and the underworld are at high levels were also highlighted.
During the visit, Marco Sorrentino, the young president of the "TerradaMare" association based in the parish of San Nicolò, expounded on the purpose of their work, which is to be a guide for tourists. In particular, he highlighted the beauty of the Church of Santa Chiara, a former historical convent of cloistered nuns.
After expressing his joy of visiting the Salesian presence in Ballarò, the Rector Major called the work an "open house for all, where sharing what one is becomes a precious gift for the other." Finally, he addressed the Ukrainian families who have found, in Santa Clara House, hospitality after fleeing the war, reminding them that the Salesians are with them.
Then last night, after the awarding of an honorary degree at the Steri Palace of the University of Palermo, Fr Ángel Fernández Artime headed to the Jesus Adolescent Institute in Palermo, accompanied by Provincial Fr. Giovanni D'Andrea. Here, after the prayer of Vespers, a meeting was held with the Pastoral Educational Communities of the works of the City of Palermo.
The Salesians of Don Bosco have been present in Palermo for more than 120 years and today there are three works: Santa Chiara, within the historic Ballarò neighborhood, Don Bosco Villa Ranchibile, on Via Libertà, and Gesù Adolescente on Via De Blasi.
After the meeting, the Rector Major stopped with those present for a moment of fraternal agape, prepared by the students and teachers of the CNOS-FAP catering sector of the Adolescent Jesus. Thus ended the Rector Major’s two-day visit to Palermo.
