Italy - In San Salvario, open doors 24/7

26 August 2022

(ANS - Turin) - The doors at "Don Bosco San Salvario" have been open all summer, ready to welcome all. Three families from Afghanistan have been hosted for a few months on the premises of the rectory of the Sacred Heart of Mary. Despite the drama of flight, there are signs of hope, and in recent months, within the walls of the Sacred Heart, there is truly an ambiance of family.

Last June 18, for example, little Ali was born, a fit baby, and parents, albeit with a few hours less sleep, extremely happy and healthy.

Only sometime later, on July 13, one of the families was reunited with the father, who had been stranded in the country for months due to paperwork problems. Finally, the family is all together, serene that they are safe.

Ten days later, on July 23, little Maria Grazia was born. She too is doing very well, and the new parents are excited about this new adventure they have started.

The children are being included in the summer oratory activities and between games, formation, and outings they are also slowly learning Italian so that from September they can start school. The parents and other adults have been included in the volunteer activities of the oratory, and in particular, they help with food distribution. They, too, are working hard to learn the language and achieve independence soon: every day they attend the Italian course at "Spazio Anch'io" and from September they will start CPIA, the Provincial Center for Adult Education.

All of them have good educational backgrounds and have had to leave very good job positions. The procedures for equivalency of qualifications, obtaining permits, and all documents are long and can sometimes be discouraging. Thus "Don Bosco San Salvario" tries to help them understand that they need to give themselves time and use this time well so that they can soon become independent again.

All these activities are possible thanks to the volunteers, who every day make an effort to accompany them to visits and appointments, visit them to spend time together, and try to find what they may need. In a phrase: they try to make them feel at home. Everyone brings to the table their skills, passions, knowledge they have and the time they have available because everyone is valuable, precious.
