Ukraine – "Listen to the voices of the dying children!"

14 March 2022

(ANS - Kyiv) - More than two weeks after the beginning of the war in Ukraine, the Salesians of the "Mary Help of Christians" Vice-Province of Greek Catholic Ukraine are raising their voices to defend the violated lives of the youngest. Here is their denunciation, combined with an appeal for international support and peace:

No one can hide or remain silent that Russian troops have invaded Ukraine and have been not only behaving cruelly to civilians for fifteen days of the war but intentionally killing children. They bomb maternity hospitals, kindergartens, and schools with missiles. This is nothing but a demonstration of the will to destroy the Ukrainian nation, to destroy its future.

Since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, about 80 children have been killed and many have been wounded. Thousands of children are forced to flee the bombardments and hide in abandoned and dilapidated basements, remaining there for days on end in the cold, without light and without food and water. Thousands of people, including children and youth, have suffered psychological trauma due to fear of death and the struggle for life.

We, Salesians and Salesian Family, cannot remain silent in these tragic moments that see the aggressor attacking and violating innocent lives. We must cry out, speak to the entire civilized world about these barbaric and horrible deeds. Listen to the voices of the children who die as a result of the bombings! Who will protect them, if not us, who have been sent to them? We must not be afraid to speak the truth. The world and world leaders need to know about these horrors.

Let us join together to protect the children, not only in prayer but also in concrete action. Thank you all for your support and help. Together we are strong!

We ask for more intense prayer for the children and the thousands who have lost everything. God, stay close to us in these tragic moments. Only with You do we feel safe!
