Colombia – "Life is not a battle, it’s a dance". Fr García Morcuende to young people of "Ciudad Don Bosco"

01 March 2022

(ANS - Medellín) - Colorful, cheerful and festive welcome ceremonies; meetings with children and young people from Salesian schools; moments of deep reflection and animation with those minors most at risk and who have already suffered a lot in their short lives; and also occasions for listening, discussion and dialogue with the Salesians and the Salesian Family. All this - and more - is characterizing the Extraordinary Visitation of Fr Miguel Angel García Morcuende, General Councilor for Youth Ministry, to the Colombia-Medellín Province (COM).

From 15 to 17 February Fr García Morcuende was on a visit to the Don Bosco Social Center in Barranquilla. On this occasion, in addition to getting to know first-hand the Salesian folklore and joy that are lived in the north of the country, he was able to admire the reality of this work with its school, a center for human development, a job placement center, a Salesian oratory, and parish. Furthermore, he was able to meet the students, collaborators, and all those who are part of the educative-pastoral community, evaluating priorities and challenges with them.

On 18 February, the General Councilor for Youth Ministry arrived at the Salesian house in Cartagena with the aim of observing and accompanying the Salesian educational and pastoral work that takes place there. He had the opportunity to speak with the children and young people, who welcomed him with an art exhibition typical of the Caribbean region; he celebrated the Eucharist for the youngsters; he met with the development management team; and, on Saturday 19th, he had the pleasure of meeting the local Salesian Family.

Arriving in Medellín on 22 and 23 February, Fr García Morcuende visited the “Sufragio” House in a visit marked by various meetings with the Educational-Pastoral Community, and by those with the students of the center. During one of these, the visitor took the opportunity of a "good morning" to highlight the virtues of each Salesian student and to tell about his experience of Salesian life; while in the meeting with the collaborators of the Salesian mission, he underlined the strengths of Salesian pedagogy and underlined the role of the Reference Framework for Salesian Youth Ministry as a vital tool for the education of children, adolescents and young people.

A great celebration marked the arrival of Fr García Morcuende at "Ciudad Don Bosco", the Salesian house dedicated to the recovery of former child soldiers. On Thursday 24 February 2022, after the festive welcome in music, the General Councilor made a tour of the structures of the vast work and spoke with the collaborators of the various activities.

The tour started from the "Fundación Don Bosco", where he was able to take a look at the graphic arts, electricity, and metal mechanics workshops, being accompanied by one of the beneficiaries of this work. He also visited the kitchens and talked with the students from the hotel training course.

Then he also spoke with Juan Pablo Sandoval, project manager of the work, about solar panels that contribute to the care of the environment and give more self-sustainability to the house. Finally, he was honored with a concert of rock, reggaeton, and classical music by the students of the art clubs.

On this occasion, Fr García Morcuende addressed words that had a great impact on the children: "Some stars reflect the light of the moon, but the stars shine with their own light. I believe that all of you have your own light, you are stars!"

And again: “Life is not a battle, it is not a fight, it’s a dance. You must always be able to dance with your partner, the partner next to you, and sometimes I have to give up a step, sometimes I have to give up the other person, but in doing so you get beautiful things." The visit to the work ended with a tour of the dormitories, carried out under the guidance of Fr Carlos Manuel Barrios.

Finally, on Friday 25 February it was the Don Bosco Educational Center (CEDBOS) to receive a visit from Fr García Morcuende. The General Councilor celebrated the Eucharist with the community and was honored with songs and poems by the students. The visitor, on his part, accompanied the children during the breaks of the school day and explored all areas of the house.

“These were days of sharing educational, evangelizing, and Salesian knowledge that help our community to continue to carry out an excellent process of pastoral animation for our children and young people,” commented the Salesians of COM.
