The two young people, Leonardo Scaglione, Past Pupil of Our Lady of Grace High School of Nizza Monferrato, of the Piedmont Province of Mary Help of Christians (IPI) and Alessandro Andreucci, Past Pupil of the Parity School of Mary Help of Christians in Rome, Via Dalmazia, of the Roman Province of St. John Bosco (IRO), were awarded for having distinguished themselves in their studies and having finished the 2nd level secondary school with highest marks.
The “Alfieri of Work” Award was established in 1961, in the centenary of the Unification of Italy, by the National Federation of Knights of Labor and is awarded each year to 25 students chosen, no more than one per Province, among the best reported by the Principals of Schools throughout Italy. From 1961 to 2019, 1,483 Alfieri of work awards have been designated.
The number of winners is equal to that of the Knights of Labor, appointed each year on the occasion of the Feast of the Republic, June 2, to underline the continuity of their commitment to study and life.
This year, on the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the Award, 50 Alfieri of work were awarded, the 2020 ceremony having been postponed due to the health emergency. Present at the ceremony were the President of the National Federation of Knights of Labor, Maurizio Sella, and the Minister of Economic Development, Giancarlo Giorgetti.
After having delivered the insignia to the Knights of Labor and the certificates of honour with the medal to the Alfieri of work, in his speech the President of the Republic underlined the importance of the intergenerational alliance and the participation of young people in the economic restart of Italy:
“Their future is identified with that of the Republic. At university they will complete their studies. We all want them to think of themselves as protagonists of a new season in the Country on the path that will be able to restart a phase of further progress. The alliance between the generations, which this ceremony symbolizes, is a condition for getting out of the stalemate that the Country has experienced.”
